Artwork Statement 作品簡介 

This piece explores the tactile potential of embroidery as a medium for spatial illusion. Using varying shades of blue thread stitched onto canvas, I construct a cube pattern that evokes depth, geometry, and dimensionality. The cube—an elemental form—serves as a metaphor for structure, stability, and perception. Through careful layering and tonal variation, the embroidered surface transforms into a visual puzzle, inviting viewers to question what is flat and what is spatial. 

The repetitive act of stitching becomes a meditative process, each thread contributing to a larger illusion. The interplay of light and shadow within the pattern mimics architectural drawing, yet remains rooted in the softness of textile. This tension between precision and imperfection, between the mathematical and the handmade, is central to the work. 

By using thread—a traditionally domestic and intimate material—to render a rigid, geometric form, I aim to challenge assumptions about both medium and motif. The result is a quiet study in dimensionality, patience, and the unexpected power of craft. 

About Artist 關於藝術家 

Gavin Tu was born in Saigon, it was in Australia where he received his architectural training. For the past three decades, Hong Kong has been home to Gavin. 

Gavin’s creative talents not only show through his works in interior projects, but also in painting and sculptures. 

In his paintings, Gavin has developed his signature style of using monochromatic acrylic in his depictions of human torsos and buddhas. For his sculptures, the beauty of lines and curves is exemplified in innovative materials. 

Gavin’s work can be found in private and corporate collections in Hong Kong and oversea.
